Introduction:
The Chocolate Block is a blend crafted from Syrah (74%), Grenache (11%), Cabernet Sauvignon (8%), Cinsault (6%), and Viognier (1%). This wine originates from the Swartland region, where the challenging growing conditions resulted in low yields but allowed for an elegant and balanced wine. The decision in 2015 to shift to Wine of Origin Swartland has allowed the team to directly manage the vineyards, ensuring a focus on purity, structure, and sustainability.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Rich and intense with blackberry and blueberry fruit, ripe brambles, and subtle notes of black olives, perfume, and dust. A touch of white pepper and coriander seed add depth.
- Palate: The bright dark berries follow through onto a juicy, abundant palate, with hints of red liquorice and fresh cherry flavors. The wine is medium to full-bodied with a weighty mid-palate, yet smooth and gentle in mouthfeel.
- Finish: Lively acidity and velvety tannins contribute to the elegance and focus of the wine, while cherry tobacco and exotic spice linger on the dry finish.
Pairing Suggestions:
Pair this Syrah blend with grilled meats, such as lamb or beef, and it also complements hearty stews. It pairs well with aged cheeses like Gouda or Cheddar, and a rich dark chocolate dessert will elevate the experience.
